It’s easy to overlook the incredible opportunities right in front of you when you’ve lived in the same place for years. Traveling outside your familiar surroundings has a way of putting things into perspective, allowing you to reflect on and appreciate what’s been there all along. Sometimes, you have to step away to truly see the beauty of what you have.

With this entry, I hope our experiences inspire you to take a closer look at the breathtaking, awe-inspiring places Western Canada has to offer. Grab your gear and let’s shred!

British Columbia is home to around 34 ski resorts, from small, independently run T-bar hills to large, internationally owned resorts with multiple gondolas. I plan to ride them all.

Rediscovering My Passion for Chasing Powder

I’ve been snowboarding on and off since I was 12. I actually started out skiing as a kid, training with a ski racing club in Saint-Sauveur, QC. In the mid-90s, I made the switch to hardboot snowboarding when it was finally allowed at some ski resorts. I loved making those deep carves on groomed runs.

After moving to Metro Vancouver in the late '90s, I didn’t ride much for a while—lack of funds and the distance to the mountains made it tricky. Instead, I channeled that adrenaline-seeking energy into skateboarding. But in my 30s, I found my way back to snowboarding, reconnecting with the roots of something I’ve always loved. These days, I ride in soft boots and recently transitioned to step-ons in my 40s. My lower back is so thankful.

For me, it’s all about freeriding through the trees and chasing those deep powder runs. I’m not out there sending it off huge cliffs—I’m more about soaking in the turns, the flow, and the incredible scenery around me. It’s my way of keeping the stoke alive and staying connected to the mountains.

From Ontario Hills to BC Mountains: My Love for the Slopes

I grew up in Toronto, where "mountains" really meant the hills of Ontario. Every year, we’d pack up for ski trips to spots like Horseshoe Valley, Blue Mountain, and Mount St. Louis Moonstone. Those trips stopped when I was around 12, and skiing didn’t make a comeback in my life until my late 20s.

Now in my 40s, I still consider myself an intermediate skier. Give me a smooth, groomed blue run, and I’m in my happy place, zooming down without a care. That said, I usually end up chasing Jarvis into powder and moguls (though I draw the line at weaving through the trees).

I've skied in places like the Laurentians and Lake Tahoe, but there's just something magical about the mountains in BC—trust me, these are mountains, not hills! The variety of snow, the epic terrain, and the stunning alpine landscapes make this place one of a kind. While Whistler has always been a favorite, I'm itching to explore other ski resorts around BC. Who knows? By the end of this journey, Whistler might have some competition for my heart! ⛷️✨

Western Canada is a treasure trove of stunning landscapes and unforgettable experiences. Whether you're hitting the slopes, exploring hidden gems, or simply soaking in the natural beauty, there’s something here for everyone to enjoy.

We hope this guide inspires you to venture out and rediscover the wonders in your own backyard—or plan an epic adventure to this incredible part of the world. Don’t forget to share your experiences and favourite spots with us. Until next time, keep exploring, and we’ll see you out there on the slopes!
