Endless Powder, Endless Possibilities

Mount Baker Ski Resort, located in northern Washington State, is renowned for its legendary snowfall, consistently one of the snowiest resorts in North America. With over 1,000 acres of terrain, it offers something for every level of skier and snowboarder—from mellow groomed runs to challenging backcountry terrain. The resort’s laid-back, no-frills vibe makes it a favourite among locals and powder hounds alike. Known for its deep, light powder, Mount Baker is the perfect place for those looking to experience some of the best snow conditions in the world.

While technically not in Western Canada, I had to include Mount Baker on this list because it’s so close to Vancouver and offers amazing snow conditions. From my home, I can see both the North Shore Mountains to the north and Mount Baker to the south—it's part of my life, even though there's a border between us. Mount Baker boasts the second-most thermally active crater in the Cascade Range, just behind Mount St. Helens (and we all know what happened there in 1980). Skiing began here between 1921–26, and though the resort's future expansion is limited due to infrastructure and its location on an active volcano, it will never become a full-scale ski resort. That’s what makes it perfect for hardcore shredders.

The classic chairlifts, including the unique two-way Chair #4, add to the resort's charm. But the real draw is the snow. If you’re into coastal powder, Mount Baker is the place to be, with deep, heavy snow that's perfect for those who want to experience some of the best conditions in the region. Just be careful—if you fall, it’s a tough recovery. For the more adventurous, you can access the backcountry via Chair 8, but make sure you have the proper training and tools. Plenty of online resources cover what you need to know for those exploring the wild side of the mountain.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS

Ride with a Buddy
Treewells are no joke—they’re a serious danger, even for experienced riders. People have tragically lost their lives to them, not just in the backcountry but on designated runs as well. Always stick close to a buddy when riding, and consider packing a rope for added safety.

No On-Mountain Accommodations
If you’re looking for a comfy bed, you’ll need to stay in the town of Glacier, about a 30-minute drive down from the mountain. The town is small, with just a handful of restaurants, a café, and a general store—so don’t expect too much. It’s a good idea to come prepared with your own food, just in case.

Pros

  • Amazing powder days
  • Normally, short line-ups meaning more runs for you
  • There’s overnight parking options. Make a reservation because there is limited space.

Cons

  • Not beginner friendly. It’s ideal for more intermediate or advanced riders.
  • Crossing the USA/CAN border can be annoying or limit what friends can come
  • Steep chairlift off-ramps can be challenging for some people

The resort also offers stunning mountain views, a variety of terrain and a welcoming atmosphere for all. Whether you're carving through fresh powder, enjoying the scenery, or challenging yourself on the slopes, Mount Baker provides an unforgettable winter experience.
