Discover the Perfect Family Ski Escape

SilverStar Mountain Resort located near Vernon, BC, is a charming, family-friendly ski destination known for its colourful village and welcoming atmosphere. Boasting over 3,000 acres of skiable terrain, it offers something for everyone—from perfectly groomed runs for beginners to challenging glades and steep chutes for advanced riders. The resort is also renowned for its extensive Nordic ski trails, making it a hub for cross-country enthusiasts. With stunning views of the Monashee Mountains, a variety of on-mountain dining options, and a cozy village vibe, SilverStar provides the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation for a memorable winter getaway.

Compared to other ski resorts in the area, SilverStar is a surprisingly quiet and underrated getaway. It might not be at the top of your go-to list like some nearby resorts, but that’s part of what makes it so special. The terrain is similar to Big White, featuring wide-open, mellow tree runs, but with fewer people on the slopes. Chairlift lines are generally short, depending on the day, adding to the relaxed vibe. However, snowboarders should watch out for flat connecting runs—keeping your speed up can save you from the hassle of unbuckling.

One of the unique aspects of SilverStar is its mountain layout, with the village located right in the center and runs extending further down. Beyond skiing and snowboarding, there’s a ton of non-ski activities to enjoy, like snowshoeing, fat-biking, tubing, ice skating, and cross-country skiing on their extensive trails. The village itself is cozy and inviting, offering great restaurants for a satisfying après-ski meal.

Where to Stay
If it’s within your budget and available, staying in the charming SilverStar Village is the most convenient option, offering ski-in/ski-out access and a cozy alpine atmosphere. However, for more budget-friendly accommodations, Vernon is just a 20-minute drive away and has plenty of options. For our group of 10, we were able to find a spacious home that comfortably fit everyone—a great option for larger groups.

Pros

  • Expansive terrain, making it easy to find fresh powder stashes.
  • Modern facilities, including efficient lifts, easy ticketing, and reliable cellular coverage.
  • A warm and welcoming community atmosphere.
  • Frequent sunny bluebird days, perfect for enjoying the scenery.

Cons

  • Fresh powder isn’t always guaranteed—I wish it snowed more consistently.
  • No overnight parking available for van campers.
  • It can get extremely cold and windy at the peak, with temperatures dropping into the negative teens—but hey, it’s winter!

The overall atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with friendly staff and guests who are down-to-earth and focused on having a great time—not just snapping selfies. If you’re looking for a laid-back winter escape with fantastic terrain and a charming vibe, SilverStar is worth a visit.
