The Little Hill That Dreams of Being A Mountain

Salmo Ski Hill is a volunteer-run gem with skiing both day and night, and zero lift lines. Small mountain with a big heart. Salmo is a small village in southeastern British Columbia. About 30 minutes south of Nelson, BC. You might have heard of the town because it has hosted the EDM music festival Shambhala Music Festival since 1998.

Salmo Ski Hill isn’t a destination resort, it’s more of a do-it-yourself, grassroots kind of place. It’s the perfect spot for kids to learn how to ride before graduating to the bigger mountains or venturing into the backcountry. With no crowds, affordable lift tickets, and short drives, it’s an ideal introduction to alpine sports.

If you live in the area and have young ones, chances are you’ve dropped them off here more than once. But it’s not just for the kids. Salmo hosts an annual banked slalom snowboard contest that draws riders of all ages. It’s also a place where the old-school crowd can relive the good old days on the slopes.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS

Get Your Coffee Kick
Start your day right with a stop at Dragonfly Café for a fresh coffee and tasty breakfast before hitting the slopes.

Be Friendly & Open
If you're visiting from out of town, keep in mind that Salmo Ski Hill is run by dedicated volunteers. Be patient, kind, and open. It’s all about the love for the sport and the tight-knit community that keeps it going.

Pros

  • Quiet
  • Good for small kids to learn downhill

Cons

  • Short runs
  • Limited trails
  • One t-bar

If you're driving along the Powder Highway (Crowsnest #3), make a stop at Salmo Ski Hill for a few quick laps. Supporting these smaller hills matters. They're the heart and soul of snow sports.
